I'm Sleepy After the City That Never Sleeps
Tribeca Festival and Death, Sex & Money's 10th Birthday
This week in your podcast feed, I turn over the mic to Death, Sex & Money producer Zoe Azulay to lead our new episode. A few months back, she got a pitch from a New York-based writer Christopher Zara, about breaking into contemporary big-city media without a college degree. The email also mentioned that he has struggled since childhood with a condition called paruresis, colloquially known as shy bladder syndrome, when anxiety can keep you from peeing, even when you physically have to. This detail caught Zoe’s attention right away because it's something she has dealt with as well.
Hear their conversation about this particular way your body and mind can betray you.
New York! New York!
We came. We saw. We Tribeca-ed.
Most of the Death, Sex & Money team and I were together in New York City this week for the Tribeca Festival and some in-person tapings. At Tribeca, I hosted a show about interviewing with tech journalist Kara Swisher and Dr. Orna Guralnick, the psychoanalyst from the fantastic Showtime documentary series Couples Therapy. Together, we explored our different tactics, and our very different personalities, that come out when we’re asking people quesitons.
(I also got to meet Dr. Orna’s pup Nico.)
Afterward, the team and I gathered with friends of the show and toasted 10 YEARS OF DEATH, SEX & MONEY! It was a fantastic party — with the best signature cocktail list ever, courtesy of Slate’s Katie Rayford.
We’ll share the audio of our Tribeca show with you soon. It was an incredible few days. As I head back west, I feel totally energized and delighted by New York and what we started there ten years ago. Thanks for being a part of it.
Until next week,
Anna
